When people ask me what my favorite wood is to work with here at Parallel Grain, I always come back to one answer: Wormy Maple, also known as Ambrosia Maple. It’s a wood that tells a story—literally. Each board is filled with character, charm, and natural artistry that no machine or stain could ever replicate.

What Makes Wormy Maple Special?

Wormy Maple isn’t a species, but rather a condition found in soft maple trees. The striking patterns and streaks you see are caused by the ambrosia beetle, which tunnels into the tree and brings with it a fungus that creates those signature gray and brown streaks. What would be a flaw to some has become a prized feature to many woodworkers—myself included.

Each piece is totally unique. It’s like nature left its own design signature in the wood grain.

Beauty with Character

I love Wormy Maple because no two pieces are the same. You’ll find intricate streaks, subtle variations in tone, and unexpected visual textures. Whether I’m making cutting boards, furniture, or custom pieces, Wormy Maple adds a richness and personality that elevates the final product.

It’s a wood that draws people in. Customers often ask, “What kind of wood is that?” and when I explain the story behind it, they love it even more.

Quality You Can Count On

Despite its name, Wormy Maple is just as strong and workable as standard maple. It sands smoothly, glues well, and takes a finish beautifully. I can trust it to deliver the durability my pieces are known for while still offering a one-of-a-kind look.

An Affordable Option with Premium Appeal

One of the best parts? Wormy Maple is affordable. Because it’s considered a “defect” by some lumber standards, it often costs less than pristine maple—even though I (and many others) would argue it’s even more beautiful.

That affordability means I can keep my prices fair while still delivering truly custom, high-quality work. It’s a win-win—for me and for you.

At Parallel Grain, I believe in making woodworking personal. That means choosing materials that reflect my values: quality, character, and a respect for natural beauty. Wormy Maple checks every box.

If you’ve never seen or owned something made from Wormy Maple, I’d love to show you what makes it special. Stop by the shop or check out some of my recent pieces—this humble, streaked maple might just become your favorite too.
